The shoulder was mostly low-angle terrain, but it was adjacent to multiple avalanche paths below and had one steep (35-40 degrees) section that was around 100 vertical feet. Prior to the steep section of the slope, my partner and I regrouped in order to ski one at a time and regroup in a safe zone well away from the steep slope and any connected steep terrain. My partner skied the slope first, and I noticed there was a convex rollover I couldn’t quite see from above. He made it well past the runout area of the avalanche path and into the trees. He was almost at the regroup point when I began to take a few steps upslope in order to ski a different section of the slope to avoid the convex rollover. On my fourth step uphill I triggered a D3 avalanche. (I was standing on a 20 degree slope near somewhat of a cornice and had stomped all over that area with my skis while we regrouped and were discussing conditions, including hopping near the cornice with some force to see if I could get collapses or shooting cracks on the slope we were on. The slope didn’t fracture until my 4th light step uphill.) I noticed the crack fracture the entire cornice and it moved about an inch but the slope was too low-angle above and below for it to fully slide. The crack propagated about 50-100 feet in front of me, onto the steep terrain we were avoiding. That is when I noticed the avalanche begin. I shouted "avalanche" to make sure my partner was aware and quickly saw him pop out of the trees and into our identified safe spot, well away from the avalanche. Over the course of about 3 seconds, I watched the entire slope continue to fracture and propagate into several separate paths, including the convex rollover that my partner skied over. The portion of the avalanche where his tracks were erased was significantly smaller than the entire avalanche, but it was still large enough to bury him had he still been on the slope. After about 5-10 seconds, I noticed a large powder cloud at the bottom of the gully traveling towards the valley floor. Nobody was caught or injured in this event, but about 100 feet of my partners tracks were erased making this a near miss in my book.

Lessons learned

Margins were a bit too thin for the avalanche conditions and current avalanche problem(s).
