During large storms, it is common to have the roads to the mountain closed, limiting staff and guests at the mountain to those that decided to stay and wait out the storm. During these isolation events, it is common to have a team of 5-10 patrollers for avalanche control work as opposed to the normal 22-30. In this event we had 6 patrollers stay in valley for the day, so we heavily modified our snow safety plan to only protect one lower mountain chairlift in hopes of opening it sometime during the day.
I was on route A, which works down a ridge with typically four people so you can split (lets call it A1 and A2) into two teams lower to assess different areas. The path that A2 assesses has a runout that crosses the path of team A1. Due to our lack of staff, we decided to have another route just shoot the beginning of their route, then hike back to shoot the A2 path so we would not need 4 people on route A. As myself (not signed off on this route) and my two partners (both young leaders of this route) worked down the ridge, we heard the other team shoot A2 while we were well out of the way, and we proceeded with our work down the ridge. As we reached the place were we would cross the A2 runout, I began to assess some normal ski cuts on either side of the gully that A2 can run through. I had grown a bit impatient with my route leader who typically moves slower than others, and I was moving towards the ski cuts before our whole team was ready to move because I deemed us to be in a pretty low hazard area of the route. As I looked into the gully, I heard a blast in the start zone of A2, and saw a powder cloud coming my way. I backed up and was enveloped by the powder cloud, and when it cleared saw the debris of a solid D2 settling into the gully I was just about to ski cut the sides of. We called the other team on the radio and made sure they were done shooting and then continued safely to the base. We later learned that the other team that had moved more quickly and decided to go back up and re-shoot A2 with a larger charge on a second pass. We had informal discussions in the station that day, a more formal one in the evening locker room and in the next day's morning meeting, and more informal ones later in the year. We discussed the natural timing that works out when we shoot the route as a normal group of 4 splitting into two teams of two, was significantly altered by the alternative overall snow safety plan for the day. We discussed that usually there is communication between teams A2 and A1 before A1 crosses the runout of A2, but that radio traffic didn't happen that day, possibly because we heard the first pass shots go off so much earlier. The biggest take away was that we are consistenlty reminding people to put on the radio any time they are doing a second pass, and trying to encourage route leaders to communicate progress and plans more openly on the radio on days that we alter from a normal full day of control work.

Lessons learned

Over-communicate plans on the radio when you are outside of normal operating habits and routines.
Just because you heard the expected shots go off in an area doesn't mean that area is complete.
Accept that moving slow is okay

Travel mode

Ski

Severity of incident

Moderate

Could this happen again?

Yes

Why or why not?

We work in a dangerous profession, and we are often changing plans due to changing conditions and operational objectives.
